- Tell us something about yourself, your background:
I live for Inventing new products or modifying existing ones to make them easier to use and perform better. I have had a very eventful and enjoyable life but unfortunately I have always lived it to the full and always to excess. This has now led to a few health problems, but the only thing I would change is to learn to do everything in moderation.
- Tell us about the products you invented with a brief explanation:
I have invented and made prototypes for quite a few products (most are on my personal website), but my most popular two are the Rice Percolator (that will come in a Hob/Stove Top or Electric Version), which is a unique foolproof way of cooking perfect fluffy rice without any measuring of either rice or water.
The other is the Roota, which is a Multi-Spike Fence or Mailbox Post Anchor that requires no digging holes or concreting and works in any type of ground.
- How/Why did you start inventing. What set you off?
I was born on a very working class Council Estate in England at a time when we didn’t even have a Black and White TV until I was about 8, so you had to make your own entertainment. One of the first programmes I saw was Robin Hood where the Sheriff of Nottingham’s men all wore suits of armour. At that time the first Supermarket in our area opened up so I approached them and asked for an empty Kellogg’s Cornflake cardboard box. I chopped it up, painted it with white emulsion, and made a full suit of armour out of it. All the kids on the estate loved it and before long we had two sides, one with white armour, and the other with black all with cardboard swords, axes etc. It’s probably one of my best inventions I have done as at least it got into production of sorts. I have been inventing things ever since.
- How did you get from idea to finished product?
I have been developing the Rice Percolator on and off for almost 10 years now as, believe it or not, it is more complicated than it looks to make it work correctly. I have had two offers to license the product off a large DRTV Company and a MultiNational Kitchen Appliance Company but due to manufacturing and financial disagreements both deals have fallen through. I came up with the Roota idea 25 years ago when I was developing my Plastic ”Coke Bottle” Fencing System but it’s only now I have made and tested a prototype.
- Let us know of useful resources that helped you i.e. Books etc
I am a little dyslexic so I don’t tend to read books (in fact, embarrassingly, I have never read one in my life), I only read articles really. I would say Linkedin and my connections have been the biggest help to me.
- Where are you with your products?
Both working product prototypes are now finished, tested and ready for preferentially Investment or a Licensing Deal.
